The History of the Bosnian Genocide
WHAT
The Bosnian Genocide started in 1992 and ended in 1995 causing 200,000 deaths. This genocide started as most do, it involved conflict. There was conflict between three groups of people, The Serbians, The Croatians, and The Bosnians. The conflict between these three ethnic groups was because the Serbs and Croats immigrated to Bosnia causing political conflict. The Serbs and Croats migrated because of troubles in their previous living place.
BACKGROUND
Following World War II some of Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, and Macedonia states became part of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia. After the death of Josip Broz Tito in 1980 came a new rein to power Serbian leader, Slobodan Milosevic, causing more conflict where the Yugoslav Republics threatened to split the union apart. In 1991, Croats and Macedonia declared independence during a war against Croats and Serb-dominated Yugoslav army. In all the tension that was built after the war the Serbian Democratic Party split from the government and created their own Serbian National Assembly.
CAUSE
On March 3, 1992, after Bosnian Serb leader, Radovan Karadzic’s Party blocked many Serb- populated areas. The President Izetbegovic gave Bosnia independence. Not having independence Bosnian Serbs wanted to be apart of a all Bosnian state the “Greater Serbia”. Early May 1992 when Bosnia was given independence, out of anger, Bosnian Serbs attacked with forces bombarding Bosnia’s capital, Sarajevo. Serbs attacked Bosnian-dominated towns in eastern Bosnia killing off civilians and Serbs described it as "ethnic cleansing". Bosnian government tried fighting back even with help from Croats army, but Serbs controlled about 3 quarters of the country by the end of 1993. Radovan Karadzic's, a Serb politician, party set up their own Republican Srpska. Croats tried to make peace proposals that failed against Serbs. The United Nations didn't want to be involved or help out, so no one prevented this tragic event to happen although some tried.
